Knowledge improves practice

fair-fish international helps animal welfare in fish to make a breakthrough, especially in the case of edible fish. At the same time, we take into account the criteria of sustainability and fair trade.

We develop the scientific basis for our own as well as for partner projects and campaigns. For example, our fair-fish database is the world's first database that provides knowledge about the needs and behaviour of aquaculture species—a basis for fish welfare advice and further research by our Fish Ethology and Welfare Group (FishEthoGroup).

fair-fish works with stakeholders in fisheries and fish farming who respect animal welfare, fair trade and conservation. Our guidelines are the yardstick. Together with other organisations, we take action against producers and traders who treat fish, fish workers or nature with disrespect.

The whole story

fair-fish was one of the first organisations in the world to campaign for the careful handling of fish by fisheries and aquaculture—and at the same time for fair payment for the people who catch or breed the fish.

On the following pages we will show you what we are after, but we will also be happy to tell you the whole story in a book.
